Styrenyx: Advanced recycling

Styrenyx logo mark, a green circular arrow icon.
Agilyx's chemical recycling technology tackles the global plastic waste problem by processing hard-to-recycle plastics that traditional recycling methods cannot, with a significantly lower carbon footprint.

Styrenyx®

Styrenyx breaks down waste polystyrene, a common hard plastic, into its original building block: styrene monomer. This includes flame-retardant-laden and other distressed feedstocks that are otherwise difficult to recycle. It uses controlled temperatures, with no catalyst required, and is the result of 8 generations of development, over 20 years of R&D, and 22 patents.

Feedstock to product
  • INPUT
    Polystyrene feedstock
Densified polystyrene waste is fed into the reactors.
  • CONVERSION
    Depolymerization
Our patented pyrolysis reactor depolymerizes the polystyrene into its original building blocks: styrene monomers.
  • OUTPUT
    Styrene monomer
The end-product, a styrene monomer, enables all styrene monomer end-markets to create new, virgin-equivalent, high-quality polystyrene products, reducing the need for fossil-based production.
Critically reviewed by a third party
Agilyx commissioned Sphera Solutions to conduct a cradle-to-gate carbon footprint assessment. The study confirmed that Styrenyx significantly reduces carbon emissions compared to traditional, fossil-based styrene production.

Proven on a commercial scale
The technology is proven in commercial operation at Toyo Styrene's facility in Chiba, Japan. The facility is the first plastic-to-plastic circular depolymerization plant of its kind.

TruStyrenyx®

TruStyrenyx is a full polymer-to-monomer advanced recycling solution for polystyrene. It combines Agilyx's Styrenyx pyrolysis process with purification technology. Together, these turn polystyrene waste, including material contaminated with flame retardants, into recycled styrene monomer of exceptional purity.

Full Circular Solution for Polystyrene Waste
Polystyrene waste has long been treated as a dead end. Styrenyx and TruStyrenyx technology turn it into a renewable source of virgin-quality material, keeping it in circulation instead of landfill. Through pyrolysis, waste is depolymerized into Agilyx Styrene Oil (ASO), then purified into styrene monomer at >99.8 wt% purity, ready as feedstock for polymer production.
